What Is Microchipping?
Microchipping is a safe and effective way to identify your dog or cat. It is far less likely than a collar tag to be lost or damaged accidentally, than a collar tag or ID barrel.
The small chip – about the size of a grain of rice – is implanted under the skin at the base of the neck, between the shoulder blades.
It uses passive RFID (radio frequency identification) which is triggered by a scanner passing over the coat. The scanner displays a unique number, which is linked to your contact details on a database.
All vets and rescue centres automatically scan stray pets, so that the owners can be quickly contacted, and some travel routes require that accompanying pets are microchipped.
Benefits of Pet Microchipping
Lost pets can be easily and quickly reunited with their owners, and pets found by members of the public can be more easily reported. In the unfortunate case of an accident, owners can be informed quickly, rather than be left wondering what has happened to an absent pet.
Microchips can be programmed to interact with certain pet care accessories – for example, there are cat flaps which will only allow your cat in and out – allowing him/her to eat in peace, without the neighbour’s cat getting an extra dinner!
Should you wish to breed from your pet, microchipping gives you the ability to check that the stud dog is the right dog.
There are many advantages of having your pet microchipped – aside from the low cost – but probably the most significant benefit is simply peace of mind.
Microchipping Legislation – Dogs & Cats
All dogs in England, Scotland and Wales are legally required to be microchipped since April 2016 (2012 in Northern Ireland).
Microchipping of cats is obligatory since June 2024.
As well as the microchip itself, the law requires that pet owner registers their pet’s details on an authorised database and keep those details up to date.
All puppies must be chipped before they leave the breeder at around 8 weeks. Failure to comply may result in a fixed £500 fine, and police and local authority employees are equipt with microchip reader scanners, so that instant enforcement of the law can be carried out.
